DREAM PUPPETS is created and performed by RICHARD HART
Richard started puppetry while an art student in Sydney
during the late 1970’s. It took three years of architecture and five years
of art training before realising that puppetry was his real passion.
Experiencing world class puppetry at a major festival in Hobart in 1979 was
decisive, resulting in experiments with puppetry and slide projections. The
outcome was an early production called The Angler Fish Ballet, which won an
award at the next major Australian International Puppet Festival in
Adelaide, 1983.
Since moving to Melbourne in 1984, Richard has worked in sound and video
production, was a graphic designer, teacher, puppet maker/designer, created
several puppet productions while raising a daughter who became a ballerina
with the Australian Ballet. In between all these were many workshops and
training sessions with master puppeteers from around the world to develop
his performance skills and a four year position as treasurer and secretary
of UNIMA Australia, an international puppetry organisation.
Some of the many puppetry groups Richard has worked with are Gardner
Puppets, Murphy’s Puppets and Polyglot Theatre. He as worked as a
puppet maker for film and television, including Pig’s Breakfast and as the
performer of Webster the swamp monster in the channel 7 series L,ll Horrors.
DREAM PUPPETS is an experience of one persons’ vision. Richard wrote the shows,
designed them , made the puppets, sets and stage and performs them. The
wonderful music soundtracks that run through the performances is by John
Grant who has brilliantly interpreted Richard’s vision to music.
